It was the 1997 Mo State cyclocross Championships and a four man breakaway had got established early in the race with Tim Kakouris, John Mathews, me and Eric Martin. It was the last lap and the last descent to the finish line when a gap was created and this unsavory scene unfolded.

This would be my second attempt at this race. Having finished 7th with a descent race last year I was hoping to make the podium as it's the last chance at a state title race for 2011. The race promoters put a 12 pack of beer prime for the first lap finisher. There was a lot of peer pressure from local race support to claim that beer. I would do my customary fast start and see if the opportunity would still remain. Sure enough riders stampeded recklessly at the front, over shooting turns and choosing bad lines through the excessive mud. I traded leads with the other lead rider(Stuart Robson),but in the end his line choices relegated him behind me as I got the prime and got ready for the counter move that would surely come. A chase group of 4 formed and played cat and mouse with one another, leaving me dangling off the front by 5 seconds at best. After 2 laps or so the chasers attacked each other in an attempt to bridge across, effectively blowing apart the chase group. One rider from that group (Peter Jensen)would catch me at what was the top of the course and lose contact through the flat section of course. Fortunately for me the finish was at the end of the flat section of course and I would nurse that small lead to a sprint finish separated by a bike length or two. This is my first year securing 2 state jerseys in one year.

Chubb Trail point 2 point mountain bike race. One of the most technically demanding courses is back. After several years off the schedule Chubb Trail is back as a point 2 point. A two faced trail that start out friendly enough only to turn into Mr Jeckel on the second half of the trail. I've raced it many times as a time trial and can never remember taking anything less or morethan 2nd place every time. I'm happy with that!

4th Overall " Castlewood Adventure Race " 7-09-11

With smothering humidity the pro/experts toed the line. We race in our age group, yet the payout is for the overall. Tim Kakouris took charge of the stampede leading to the first climb. Approaching the base of the climb I positioned myself in the front of a rocky creek bed style climb known as " Lone Wolf " . A second attacked occurred half way up the climb as some wanted to open up a gap before the long descent back down. Slipping backwards to 5th in the initial climb I re-accelerated at the top and followed 4th place down the first climb. Passing 4th at the bottom I was left with a gap to 3rd place that I would not close. I was 2nd in the 40+ age group and 4th overall. It was nice to see Castlewood Park again and the new trails that have been added!

The ultimatum. . . . The race organizers decided to host both the road and mountain bike state championships on the same day. Effectively cutting into attendance of both. Leaving the few with dual potential in both disciplines to make a decision. I chose off road to avoid team tactics that occure in road racing.
Eyes where on radar during the 24hrs leading up to the race. Current and predicted rain forecast drowned out the enthusiasm of many. The treacherously technical course would scare off the remainder of the unsure.
Arriving to a drizzling course insured no test ride or warm up would happen. Knowingly racing on fast tires with NO traction is not smart. Riding them on rocks and mud is really asking for it. I got the whole shot, led to the single track and for half of the first lap when a group of 6 passed me in a field crossing. I chased them into the the single track where I lost track of who's who as we began to pass lap riders. The course dried up slightly before the finish but many elbows and knees suffered the consequences.
I came out of my pedals many times and with plastic bottom cycling shoes wasn't anymore graceful when pushing the bike. Happy to have stayed off the ground I finished once again in a shell shocked daze of flash back close calls that happened through out the race. Hoping I stayed in the top 3 I was shocked to find I had won.

Where to start. With very few mountain bike rides this year and fewer mountain bike races. No test ride, no warm up etc. There's no reason I should have won other than I always swing for the fences in any challenge regardless of the odds or chances. Suffocate anxiety, chin check doubt and bring all your experience to the table. From my bikes set up to the supplements propelling me ( CR carborocket ) , all your ducks have to be in a row. 5 hrs of suffocating heat ended in cold hypothermic rain and the deadliest weekend in tornado history as the loud speaker at the award ceremony attempted to speak over the tornado sirens. I am humbled by every successful event!

After being plagued with poor tire choices in 29ers I was FINALLY able to get my favorites in the 29r version. This course had received many days of rain turning the rocky condition treacherous. Many riders sitting this one out. I had never seen or ridden the new trails at Greenfelder and had no warm up. The starts are crucial here as I struggled to hold the front on the way to the single track. Entering the single track in second was fine but dictated my pace to the bottom of the first climb where all my gaps happen in racing. First place left me in no mans land for the next hour, till third pulled up and later pulled away. More scared of the treacherous course I refused to be distracted with a chase or pursuit. With 5 miles left second place was coming back quickly as his legs where cramping. Coming to the finish line I was happy with second. Only to find out first had broke his wrist and I had won the race. Still shell shocked from riding/ramping/sliding through muddy rocks for 2+hrs I could only stare ground and thank the Lord for letting me come through healthy( Thank You )!!!!

There was 13 races in this series. Starting in March and ending in August. Starting in the deserts of southern Utah before heading north to the alpine ski resorts of northern Utah. The fastest field outside of the Pros leaves many reluctant to compete in our class. Made up of mostly former Pros with children and like me are faster in there 40's than in there 30's or 20's. A few mechanicals held me back, but I'm sure the fastest man won the series. That's 2 years in a row taking second place overall.

2nd @ Rock the Canyons 8-7-10 season final

" Rock The Canyons " is held at yet another 2002 Winter Olympic venue, The Canyons ski resort. This race is the finals of a 13 race series starting in March in the southern Utah deserts and retreating to the alpine ski resorts for the summer. They count 11 of 13 races for the overall series. It's a serious commitment to compete for the " overall" title. I hoped to have won one more race before the series was over for the year. This days event racers where battling to secure " overall " positions as well. In the series I was too deep into second overall to catch 1st and to far ahead of 3rd to be caught myself. It's funny as I spent most of the race thinking I was in first. They combined more age groups than normal and changed the course dramatically right before the start. Ensure only the locals would be familiar with the course. I got the whole shot to the single track and held it until the first big fire road. Slipping to 3rd before the single track started again. By that time we where catching other age groups and in the confusion I thought I was in first, just to finish second to the series leader Kevin Moffit. I'm fairly happy with this season. The biggest stumbling block being the " getto" tubeless issues ( not worth it) that kept me from being at least a threat to first overall.

Renovated for the 2002 winter olympics, Snow Basin ski resort served as yet another perfect venue. Updated and renovated for the olympics the resort was totally awesome for summer events as well. I've had bronchitis for 2 weeks, had untested tires, and absolutely no preride. The Snow Basin venue plays host to weekly training series, so I new the locals would have the home court advantage. For racing the course blind I did really well, holding the lead for the first lap. The new tires where a huge stumbling block of resistance and control and in this class you need to keep things as seamless as possible. Stuck in second overall for the series I plan on making a statement at the finals this weekend.

2nd @ 23rd annual "Snowbird Mountain Bout"

Snowbird Ski Resort is one of steepest, most vertical ski resorts in Utah. Home of 2 or 3 hillclimb races and also serves as the decisive stage in the " Tour of Utah". This course often receives less of a turn out because of it's difficulty in climbing and hazardous descents. Of course that would make it ideal for me. I won this course last year by 4 minutes. It was not to be this year as Bob Saffel showed us how fast we needed to go and in doing so put me and him 4 minutes or more on third place. Happy to be in one piece.

One of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the rockies held host to the 7th round of the series. Lots of single track, including muddy planks, boulder gardens, steep pitches. Many including myself missed a turn and lost more than a few seconds. My camera does no justice to the beautiful things it missed.

Simply another unbelievibly beautiful venue. After many of the races being dominated with fire road climbs and unpassable single track descents we finally have a course that in actually in a forest/woods. Perfect weather( odd) on tap for the day. Many of the stronger climbers find other plans for this weekend.

5th Deer Valley Pedal fest 6.12.10

DeerValley Ski resort has been the venue for many Nationals and World Cup. This was the " 19th" annual for the Intermountain Cup. The race was postponed on Saturday and rescheduled to Wednsday night, which was the very next rain storm. Tempartures in upper to lower 40's and off and on drizzle. It was the first time I've ever raced with a wind breaker ( foregot some base layers). Open fireroad climbs and single track descents insured it was a climbers course. It was a race to the top of the first climb and we finished in that order.

5th Stan Crane Memorial 5.31.10

This venue is very unique. The trail system, also Known as " Corner Canyon" is built in, around and through the surrounding neighborhood. 3000+ ft of climbing and single track so complex that I could not memorize the course to any real benefit. The turn out is huge do to the whole neighborhood showin up to defend there turf. I finished 5th which was great for me. I made no mistakes though my fitness is as slow in coming as spring it's self. I now move deep into second overall for the series.

4th Hammer Fest @ Soldier Hollow 5.22.10

The truth is in the title. "Soldier Hollow" was a cross country ski course designed and raced in the 2002 Olympics. In the spring however its simply grass roads wandering up and across the mountain side. The course was shortened by 1 mile of the ONLY single track involved in the course, leaving 8 miles of hilly grass roads. It was snowing all night and the morning before the race. The rained stopped an hour before the start and the course being all grass was only slightly effected. Anxiety was still high with the riders over the rain. Now that " Twitter" updates are live from the course the races have higher attendance when rain is in the area instead of assuming it's muddy.

4th Sundance Spin 2010

Home of the "Sundance Film Festival" this ski resort course is one of the most difficult in the series. Hard enough just to finish, let alone place. With a back drop like something out of " Lord of the Rings" the race starts with at least 20 minutes of climbing at full effort to the top. This is some of the first singl...e track offered is the series and the first out of the deserts and up in the mountains. I led the climb 2/3 of the way up. Catching first at the bottom, starting the second lap. After that I battled inside the top 6 until pulling ahead to secure a hard fought 4th.

2nd Place, Cholla Challenge 4/3/10

Leaving Salt Lake with 4 inches of snow on the ground and arriving in Hurricane Utah, 3 hours and 2000 ft lower and it's 65 degrees and sunny for the second year in a row. Once again I led the race until the last 15 minutes, slipping to second after being passed by a unknown rider.

7th Desert Rampage 3-6-10

Desert Rampage is the season opener for the - Intermountain Cup- cross country race series. The series starts here the first weekend in March because of the warm weather conditions in southern Utah year round. The series works it's self northward as the season gets warmer. Many come from Arizona, Nevada, Colorado eager to race this soon in the year. Many having been stuck working out indoors and have new equipment to try out. From the Pro field to the beginner class the fields where packed, the weather was great as usual. The course is technically friendly for all. Can't ask for more

This is the 8th annual " Frozen Hog ". A winter Mountain bike race held ( hopefully ) on the snow. The style of the course brings it's own strategies and techniques that I am still learning. It's a super up beat fun feel event and the big focus is in the " Team" overall. They have a large ( Stanley cup) style trophy th...at has all past winning teams engraved on it. The winning team gets to have the trophy till the following year. I won this race last year by a good margin. Last year we ran 40-60% of the course, this year we ran nearly the entire course. I finished 2nd in my category and 5th overall. Next year I'll do a little running before hand to get ready.

The 4th round of the Utah series was at yet another equestrian arena. A nice day until the start of the last race( mine). Hail and sleet started the race with us and continued off and on through out. 3rd UTCX series #3 Heber Utah

Race # 3 in the UTCX ( Utah cyclocross ) series at the fairgrounds ( horse arena) in Heber Utah. Sunny weather starting in the upper 30s and warming to 70+ degrees. The only adversity came in the way of the notoriuos " Goathead" thorns, which plagued racers young and old, leaving sometimes a trail of tears.

After flatting in the first round of the series it was nice to get a descent cross race without incident. I got what I deserved but was in position to do more. The course was ruff enough for my watch to rub a good raw spot . So now I can't where it, weird. This is the train leaving the station. We started with ten or so, the 8 or so. Crash here, slide out there, then 6, then 5 as the last four shattered with one to go, leaving me in a humble 4th.

2nd place - Harvest Moon Crit 2009 Masters 35+

This is the road seaon final event. A big street festival in full swing there was no lack of random people crossing the course through out all races all day. The masters 35+ went really well with our team finishing 1st 2nd and 3rd, lapping the feild and taking turns on the primes. We desided to give our shop owner and sponcer 1st while I took second. Me and Autumn had fun riding all the painted horses. 3rd last year, second this year, maybe 1st next year

With the 2009 mtb series finished I feel satisfied with my results. The 2 mechanicals I had all season cost me the series, that and not being able to afford to attend enough races to secure a lead. I won the 40+ expert state championships, a title I'd rather have won more than the series. Next year will be interesting if I can continue to establish my climbing capabilities.

Finishing first in a state and on a course I thought I never stood a chance at winning on. I was given some hope last year when I took 3rd, still 5+ minutes off the lead time. This year was total roll reversal as I won by 8+ minutes. The fastest overall expert time. One of the biggest leads I've EVER won by. 1600ft of climbing per lap and 3 and a half laps for over 5600ft of climbing in 21+ miles. Looks like I'll be stumbling into the top 3 overall for 2009.

The 2008 weekly training series enters mid season and as the temperature heat up the competition cools down. Starting the season surviving in the A's has begun to reverse it's polarities as I get strong in because the breaks but not enough to dominate the finish,...yet.

1st Wolf Creek " Super D "

Super D, a long distance downhill mountain bike race. Punctuated with climbs through out but must finish lower in elevation than the start. I rarely lose as long as I don't miss any turns. It rained the whole day, sketching most the field into dropping out. All the fastest riders showed and even though I don't have a pro license in this field I had the fastest overall time of the day.

Snow covered Utah from north to south as we drove in and out of blizzard/snow squalls. With in 40 minutes of the venue we dropped 2000 ft into a oasis valley of 60 degree sunshine. where I raced with just arm warmers. My second race with the 29 inch wheels left no doute when me and the biggest horse left out of the gate and gapped away on the first turn. With 300 meters to the first single track approaching I launch with discouraging momentum and enter technical single track with a 5-10 second gap. From there I just checked out what the bike could do and found my self off the front by seconds for 19 of the 22 miles. lamenting to a fully ridged single speed 29r ( surprise) first and last years state champ within 2 minutes of the finish line.who was too disappointed he didn't win by the usual several minutes and didn't show for the podium, "sand bagging" and still failing is a heavy task master for those type. I wrecked once allowing them to see me restarting and had younger expert age groups pride blocking in the single track. Last year I finished 8th, so hopefully things are getting faster.

March has started off inconsistent in weather and race schedule. Training rides and training races have been great. Competing on a race car track is a ideal place to test fitness and components. Our team is looking poised to battle for the overall series this year.

Even though 10th isn't 1st it sure feels that way. The new 29r did everything I expected and even with 2 mechanical stops ( assembled the night before ) I was still 4-6 minutes faster than last year. I didn't have a chance to test ride the course or even ride XC since last fall. This should be my slowest XC race this year.

1st... Frozen Hog 2009

Frozen Hog is the XC season opener. Not a part of any series and predictably in some type of snow, it primary motivation is pure fun and fund raising. Never the less anyone who thinks they are good in the snow show up. 29r's incase you don't look around are taking over the podium and XC races in general and I knew snow was one of there specialties. So I lowered my tire pressure to about 18-25lbs and in the start road away from the pro field with a running start and held the lead until the last 4 minutes of the course and was passed by two 29rs approaching the finish line. They rerouted the course right before the start and I made many wrong turns and even back tracked until I could see second to confirm I was on the right path. I finished 1st in 40+ expert and 3rd overall. I get my 29r in the next week or 2, then the scales will be balanced.

The confusion is complicated from traditional culture in the road racing industry. The last to use progressive materials and technology. The last to clip in, use index shifting, threadless headsets, tubeless, shunning materials like aluminum, carbon etc. The UCI " created a rule to suffocate this knowledge to protect past records set on out dated geometry. Most of the industry is spoon fed from engineers and designers who have little experience in a limited area of cycling and are forced to design inside the UCIs limitations.

The 2008 cyclocross season was spent trying to hold on to the top 5 riders. With few technical problems to speak of, they simply stripped me me off there wheel as they took turns attacking our lead breakaway. On the final race the current 3rd place racer did not show, forfeiting 3rd to me. 1st on the right, second in the middle. I'm 3rd on the left with the mud mask.

As the 2008 cyclocross season winds down I review my campaign. I currently struggle to reach the top 3 overall. That's the first time since being in this state. There where no predictable problems. I could always be more fit. I was much faster this year than the previous seasons. But faster still was the competition. The " masters A" field means just that. Men who have mastered the balance of family and fitness. They are the ones who remained after the pride of youth. They remain to compete against themselves, youth and time. They are mature lions of the pride.

1st 2008 USCF training series overall

The training series starts in March and runs Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays nights, every evening until the end of September. The longest and most repetitive series I've ever been involved in. It wouldn't be such a big deal normally accept the fact that I muscled it away against the will of the entire Field of competitors. There whole focus was to contain and minimize my results. In the end they disappointed themselves, many questioning there own ability and status on a bike. I adsorbed there efforts, ever learning, there desperateness teaching and strengthening every level of my riding. It actually represents not the fastest, but proves who got the best workout. The night " Cross Vegas" race course. Lance Armstrong ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu-2GlpHKu8&feature=related )was in the field and I recorded some bad footage in the blog. I was at " interbike" for 3 days looking at next years products and raced in the " Industry Cup " . A criterium race held form those in the industry. It was crazy chaotic ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHQzSI-U-es&NR=1 , with a lot of wrecks. I made the cut for the finish and wasn't aware it was the last lap and failed to sprint. No excuse for my experience level. The other picture is me and the current National champ " Tylor Hamilton". I came home in time to hit the last crit of the year. Finishing 2nd by a half a bike. No complaints!

Needless to say this was the first cross race of the year. Once again 2nd and I'm happy with that. The winner was 16yrs old and he road away by himself leaving 2 of us chasing him lapping the field in some cases several times. This years XC masters where present and promptly dropped on my MTB from 1998. My CX bike just arrived and brings renewed enthusiasm and raw speed. Boise Bonzi 2008 2nd place....4th overall

It started with a 100+ riders and a 40 min bus ride up to Bogus Basin. A small ski resort 5000ft above downtown Boise ID. At least I got my first test ride of a course before the race, but 15 miles at eye watering, dust storm speeds didn't allow me to memorize any of the course. I finished 2nd in the experts and 4th overall. Every rider chose there own bike style. Mostly cross country or light weight downhill. When the dust cleared the cross country riders ( hard tails) prevailed. The award ceremony was held at the bicycle park which contains a bmx skate park, mountain bike terrain park and a velodrome under construction. It was held in conjunction with " Trailapolluzza", a festival to raise money for the velodrome. The weekend was unbelievable.

Sundance Showdown " Super D "

What is a " Super D " race. It's a super long distance downhill mountainbike course, thus " Super D". Sundance Ski resort, home of the " Sundance film festival " host the last round of the " Utah State Downhill Series ". Ensuring the overall winners will all be present. After over shooting several turns on a course I had no chance to test ride ( yet again ). I focus on flow and remain undefeated here for 4 yrs. I'm in this video twice from 07.
